Gopher, Mole, and Vole activity can look similar to the untrained eye.
Here we will dig a little deeper on the details of what could be learking under ground.
What's Digging Up Your Yard?
Moles
Moles are insectivores. They are in search of all things bugs and worms.
Mole mounds are "volcano" shaped, almost perfectly round, with a "peak" or noticeably high point in the center. These are excavation mounds, areas of which the moles is tunneling deeper into the ground.
Moles will also move in a tunneling fashion, just under the first layer of ground cover. These tunnels or "veins" are typically found near edges of concrete, walkways, foundations, and water lines and used as highways to travel a distance, quickly, and unnoticed. These shallow tunnels can also be signs of foraging for bugs and worms.
Moles activity is widely noticed in lush green lawn areas, as this is a prime feeding zone, But anywhere there is water, there is food!
A territorial and solitary mammal, the mole is usually found by himself although can be found in mating pairs. Moles do not live in family groups and will force their young out when weaned.
Voles
Voles are rodents, who take up residence in vacant gopher or mole tunnles. They are not diggers by nature, but can work their way through to an old tunnel system to burrow.
An active vole hole will remain open, with a clear pathway used as an enterence and exit. An active vole hole will not contain spiderwebs or any fallen particles as an active run will be free of all debris.
Often mistaken for mice, voles can and will be found in family groups.
Gophers
Gophers are herbavores. They are after all things veg, from roots to greens.
Gophers are rodents, who create a cresant shaped ecavation mound, with a small circular plug to one side. Some gopher feeder holes will show a small plug of dirt with little to no excavation, this is where they are surfaced to briefly graze.
